I’m sure everyone has recurring dreams.  Here are my Top 5:

Falling

Trying to wake up from a dream within my dream (called a Lucid dream)

Misplacing an audio cart during the morning radio show and having to poorly ad lib on the air (fear from radio days)

Teeth disintegrating or falling out

Being chased

I never knew how common these dreams were (except #3) until I started searching around on the web.  Here are the meaning of each dream according to TheCuriousDreamer.com. I’m not too much into interpreting dreams, but these are entertaining:

  1. Falling – Dreaming that you are falling can represent a feeling or fear of abandonment, especially feeling abandoned by a “caretaker” such as a partner, employer, or by God. Also can be a feeling or fear of a loss of security or control, or a sudden lack of foundation in your life, such as a situation where “the rug is pulled out from under you”.
  2. Lucid Dream -  Dreaming that you go to sleep and have another dream can be a device the subconscious mind uses to indicate a change in context or timeframe within the original dream, such as:
    • A review of an earlier or later situation than that of the original dream
    • A change to a different level of detail, consciousness, or mood of the dreamer
    • A portrayal of a “what if” scenario, perhaps that is a bit of a stretch for the dreamer to imagine
    • A temporary diversion in the dream itself, or representing an actual temporary diversion in the dreamer’s life
    • An aspect of the dreamer’s life that the dreamer tends to compartmentalize or to see separately from the rest of their life
    • A matter that the subconscious mind suddenly decides to explore
    • A typical shift from one event in a series to the next, then happening to return to the first event
    • Some other shift in reality or perception
  3. Misplacing audio cart – this is a crazy fear I had in my first job.  If I wouldn’t have the right song or sound effect in the machine in time when the morning show host used it, then I’d be called out on it, and I’d have to speak about it on air.  This stuff happened from time to time, and maybe it was traumatic at the time–since it was my first job and I was trying to perfect my craft–but these days I know it wouldn’t be a big deal and we’d have fun with it on the air if it happened.  So really, I don’t know why I dream about this still.
  4. Losing teeth – A dream about losing teeth, or discovering missing teeth, can indicate a feeling or a fear that something has caused you to lose a healthy balance within your physical body or within your mental state or life.
  5. Being chased -  If you dream someone is chasing you, consider the context.  If the chaser wants to harm you, this can represent a feeling or fear of: persecution, hostility, aggression, criticism, etc. by another person or by “people in general.” It can also represent real-life situation where you feel your boundaries have been crossed or your integrity has been compromised.

Do dreams help balance you out by putting your subconscious in situations that would be impossible in the conscious world?  I read most psychologists say the proper interpretation of dreams could help in problem-solving and self-examination. To do this, an effort must be made to remember one’s dreams on a regular basis and log them in a daily diary upon awakening.  I remember the dreams right away, but I’ve never logged them in a diary.
