There are thousands of websites for finding the best hotels deals online, but I’ve discovered the best deals are hidden in Twitter feeds.

My scenario: I’m heading to Las Vegas for the Rock n Roll Las Vegas Marathon in December, and I need a hotel for 5 days.  About a month ago, I started following a bunch of Las Vegas hotels on Twitter, including Planet Hollywood, Luxor, MGM Grand, Golden Nugget, Caesar’s Palace and the Hard Rock Casino.

I checked my Twitter account one Thursday morning a couple weeks ago and noticed the MGM Grand had a special deal just for Twitter followers.  They call it Twitter Thursday, where they tweet the hashtag #MGMGrandTwitterThurs with an exclusive offer available for 24 hours only. The deals change every week–sometimes it’s a Spa deal, sometimes it’s a hotel price cut.  You have to watch closely.  In my case, after seeing the hotel deal, I couldn’t pass it up, and I booked it right away.  I was so impressed, I was inspired to write this with a general comparison to other major hotel deals online.

The comparison below is for 5 days, checking in on Friday, December 4th and checking out Wednesday, December 9th.

The room I booked is the West Wing King Room (pictured).  A description from MGM Grand’s website:

The clean design is complemented by flat screen TVs in the bedroom and embedded in the bathroom mirror, DVD player, Bose Wave radio alarm clock, and stay in touch with convenient 2-line telephones. Relax and enjoy the extra large tiled shower with shower head and shower wand. Even the King-size beds and crisp linens make a strong design statement.

What impressed me the most was the flat screen TV embedded in the bathroom mirror. Here’s a video of the room I found on YouTube.  I didn’t take the video–by the way–since my trip isn’t until December.  All kinds of awesome 18 seconds in:

Here’s the breakdown.  Keep in mind, prices are base rate and do not include taxes and fees.

My recommendation:
Follow the Twitter accounts of the hotels you want to stay at, and look for Twitter-only deals.  Here’s a comprehensive list of hotels on Twitter. If your favorite hotel doesn’t use Twitter, demand it! They need to get on board.  They’re missing big opportunities for viral growth and customer satisfaction.

I’m impressed how MGM Grand understands their customers and “gets it” when it comes to social media.  You can follow them on Twitter @MGMGrand.

Please comment below if you snagged a great deal using Twitter or any other social media methods.
