Advancing the Story, March 2009
Media Consultant Deborah Potter featured my post in her article about Twittering in the newsroom located on this site.
“Using Twitter as a resource can help keep a TV station on top of most local and breaking news. So says Patrick O’Brien, digital development director at WUSA-TV in Washington, DC, whom we introduced in an earlier post. O’Brien has helped to train his newsroom staff on how to use Twitter in gathering and disseminating news. Now, he’s sharing tips on his personal blog.”
StandUpKid’s LocalTVNews, March 2009
Mark Joyella writes about WUSA’s Digital Correspondent Scott Broom, and he mentions me in his article about using social media tools in the newsroom.
“This is not a common belief–in fact, it’s a foreign concept–in most local TV newsrooms. You know the places where Facebook remains a “new” idea, and Twitter is, well, not on the radar yet. Broom says WUSA digital bosses like Lane Michaelsen and Patrick O’Brien encourage their reporters to take advantage of all these social media tools.”
One Man’s Band, March 2009
WUSA’s Digital Correspondent Scott Broom mentions me in his article, and explains how I teach others how to use Twitter in the newsroom.
“There’s no promotions department involved for this kind of personal reporter-to-friends mico-marketing. But there is a “Digital Development Director” who preaches the Twitter gospel and teaches staff all the tricks.”
Advancing the Story, February 2009
I spent one morning with media consultant Deborah Potter with Advancing the Story. We discussed my new position and offered social networking advice to college students wanting to get into the media field.
“The digital development director at WUSA-TV in Washington, DC, doesn’t just manage the station’s Web site. Patrick O’Brien is also in charge of five local microsites focused on everything from young moms to entertainment to high school sports. So what does he really do?”
Newslab, October 2008
I was quoted in an article by Newlab.org’s Deborah Potter on how I use Twitter to gather news and information. This was published online and in print.
“Web producer Patrick O’Brien, then at KTVI-TV in St. Louis, says he was surprised to find that he and his girlfriend were the only Twitter-heads in the group. He’s used it to share news content, find story ideas and get a heads-up on breaking news, including the earthquakes in the Midwest earlier this year.”
602 Communications, September 2008
Graeme Newell, media consultant with 602 Communications, lists me in his Marketing Movers article:
“What happens when you mix a good Irishman and his background in St. Louis? Coverage of course. Joining W*USA in DC is none other than Mr. Patrick O’Brien, who is taking the brand new position of Digital Development Director at the Gannett CBS affil in the capital. Mr. O comes to the job from the FOX affiliate.”
Energy Fitness Gym, July 2006
I am featured on Energy Fitness Gym’s Get Results page where I praise personal training as the reason I lost 40 pounds.
“Last year, I wanted to be in the best shape of my life, so I trained for a marathon. After 4 months of running 4x a week, I lost about 10 pounds but didn’t look any thinner. Still frustrated, I walked into Energy Fitness and tried out Gordon’s nutrition program. Within the first week, I dropped 8 pounds, and within a few months, I was leaner and stronger than ever”
St. Louis Journalism Review, May 2006
I was interviewed for an article in St. Louis Journalism Review about how TV station websites are unfortunately still being beat by their broadcast.
“In this analysis, Channel 2 came up short many times. Patrick O’Brien, producer and webmaster at Channel 2, offered what could be an explanation or at least a solution. O’Brien and others at the station realize that the site may not be doing what many expect a news Web site to do. He said those issues will be addressed when the new design for the Fox 2 site is rolled out mid-summer as part of a larger revamping of 25 local station sites owned by Fox”
St. Louis Journalism Review, December 2006
I was asked by the St. Louis Journalism Review to explain how web coverage and broadcast coverage differs with how television stations gather and present news and information.
“The same philosophy applies at KTVI (Channel 2), where Patrick O’Brien is the senior web producer. “The coverage continues beyond the broadcast on our Web site,” he says. “We provide additional information online that cannot be covered in the short amount of time on air, such as court documents, story-related Web links, raw or extended video. Often times, we air a news conference on the broadcast, then the coverage continues through a live stream online with a chat room for community interaction.”
Marathon Guide, August 2005
I submitted my First Marathon article to MarathonGuide.com after running Humpy’s Marathon in Anchorage Alaska on August 21 ,2005.
“I opened the hotel curtains to find dark rainy streets. After training in nearly 100-degree weather in St. Louis, I wasn’t expecting a rainy 55-degree day. But, it didn’t matter. It was marathon day. My group started with ponchos on, and after a couple minutes, we forgot about it. The trail was amazing, traveling through round metal tunnels and alongside babbling brooks.”
